Short E-skip

It is difficult for people who are not TV/FM DXers to understand why short distance Es is so fascinating to TV DXers. They never seem to grasp the concept of Es effecting only TV signals that are more than 500 miles away. Without further ado, let it be said that signals received by Es which are nearer than 600 miles are rare, while reception of signals nearer than 500 miles is almost impossible.

Dear Mr. Oglethorpe,

Thanks for writing about KBEJ-TV. I can confirm for you that what
you received was in fact the KBEJ transmitter. You saw video of a
test signal because the microwave link from Austin to Stonewall,
Texas, went down. There is an automatic video presence sensor that
switches up the test generator whenever the studio-to-transmitter
link (STL) is lost.

It is pretty cool that you can receive KBEJ in Shreveport. Watch
for the signal this weekend, as the tropo ducting forecast is for
quite severe conditions, optimum for DXing.

Best regards,
