Spring / Summer 2012 TV DX Highlights Page 1

The amount of time spent on DXing during the E-skip season of 2012 was more limited here than usual. I did not DX at all in April, May, and the first eleven days of June. Furthermore, I was unable to take advantage of most morning and midday openings. Nor was I inclined toward doing unattended recording because I did not want to spend time reviewing time-shifted DX. Thus, the variety of stations and the quality of DX are not as impressive as that of previous years. As usual, the frequently-IDed Mexican analog TVs (such as XEFB-2, XEPM-2, and XEWO-2) were received numerous times in June and July. In addition, a handful of commonly-IDed Canadian analogs that remained on the air were received here. This page displays several of my catches from the Summer of 2012.

CHBX-2 has long been my most-common ID from Canada. In addition to CTV Northern Ontario ID material, CHBX runs many local ads and community annoucements for Sault Ste Marie.

It has not been many years since CKY used call letter IDs.

Former XEFB-2 Relayer XHCNL-2 Saltillo Is Not a New Log for Me

(Please note: XHCNL-2 and XHCNL-3 were using a different "MTY TV" logo earlier this year. However, Televisa Monterrey's Web site contianed this current logo in 2011. Therefore, XHCNL-34 has apparently been using this logo for a while.)

Channel 2 in Saltillo (supposedly a low-power station) was a full-time relayer of XEFB-2 Monterrey in the past. Fernando Garcia verified that XEFB had a relayer on channel 2 when I told him that two XEFB signals mixed together were received at my location one morning. (One signal was floating on the other.) This was back when XEFB aired a local "Buenos Dias" morning program with XEFB's logo, time, and temperature displayed full-time. Two XEFBs mixed together were received several times over the years.

The "MTY TV" station in this picture is indeed XHCNL-2 per the schedules on the Televisa Monterrey site. XEFB-2 airs talker Laura on weekdays from 1300 - 1400 CT while XHCNL-2 runs the soap opera Valientes from 1330 - 1430. Reception was on June 28, 2012, via E-skip.

The picture to the right shows XEFB-2 and XHCNL-2 mixed together via Es. The newscaster to the left is on XEFB. The floating signal is XHCNL with a big "MTY TV" logo on the left side. This was received on July 4, 2012. Distance to XHCNL is 651 miles. Distance to XEFB is 611 miles.

Short, yet sometimes strong, spurts of XHCNL-2 were received numerous times in June and July.

XHHSS-4
Hermosillo, SON

The text ID upper right is superimposed over a Sonora political ad.
Mexico text IDs are inserted automatically by machines, and the machines do not care what kind of programming is on the air.
Although XHHSS-4 is not as widely IDed by DXers as Chihuahua and Sinaloa stations, this is my most-commonly received network relayer text ID.

XHBC-3
Mexicali, BCN

1268 miles via Es
XHBC-3 does not put the "Televisa Mexicali" ID bug on the screen during locally-produced programming, but ID material is generally easy to find in the local shows.

XHBC-3 analog will likely shut-down by the end of 2013.

XHY-2 has never been as common here as Merida's XHMEN-4 (with the big, old-fashioned superimposed calls ID) and XHQRO-2 Cancun (with the modern, small text ID).
July 4, 2012
This is the beginning of a long day of DX from Mexico. What an odd way to celebrate the anniversary of the United States of America's independence. (Strong, long-lived Es has actually been common here on Independence Day in past years.) We did manage to shoot some fireworks that night. And that is the reason this table features red, white, and blue...
XELN-4
Torreon, COAH

753 miles via Es
"La tele de aqui" is upper right.
The logo has been upper left in the past. I saw the logo several times this year, and it was always upper right.

XELN-4 analog will likely shut-down by the end of 2014.
XHAE-5
Saltillo, COAH

"Televisa SALTILLO" is upper left.
Look closely, and you still will not likely be able to read "Saltillo." It looked a little better when it was live on the screen.

Durango's XHDI-5 and XHDI-6

XHDI-5 is another station that is not widely IDed by DXers, yet it is common here via E-skip. The ID to the right is from August 18, 2002.

XHDI-6, on the other hand, is a new log. This one was a very pleasant surprise in more than one way. (1) I actually expected XET-6 Monterrey, never expecting a new log. (2) Unlike so many Mexico TV stations, XHDI-6 Cuauhtemoc is an official TV station; XHDI-6 is listed on Doug Smith's TV Database as a low-power station.

Note that the ID is the same one XHDI-5 uses. Although both XHDIs were received on July 4, the situation did not work out so that I could see both stations when the ID was up. Nevertheless, I think the channel 6 relays XHDI-5 (text IDs and all), which means the ID is up at the same time on both stations. I wonder if the Cuauhtemoc station possibly receives XHDI-5's signal over the air using a very good antenna setup...

When this ID came up, my first thought was that my channel 6 TV was on the wrong channel. Fortunately, the TV and VCR were both on channel 6.
